Signs & Symptoms of Dengue Fever
The period between exposure to dengue virus and the appearance of the first symptoms, varies from 2 to 7 days.
The onset of the disease is sudden, which begins as influenza-like illness producing the typical flu-like symptoms. High Fever (40°C/ 104°F) is usually accompanied by at least two of the following symptoms:
Headaches
Pain behind the eyes
Nausea
Vomiting
Swollen glands
Joint, bone or muscle pains
Rash (last for 1-5 days)
Generally, younger children and those with their first dengue infection have a milder illness than older children and adults. However Most people recover within a week or so.
Severe dengue Symptoms
When developing into severe dengue, the critical phase takes place around 3-7 days after the first sign of illness. Temperature will decrease; this does not mean the person is necessarily recovering. On the other hand, special attention needs to be given to these warning signs as it could lead to severe dengue.Signs & symptoms of severe dengue may include the following:
Severe abdominal pain
Persistent vomiting
Bleeding gums/nose
Rapid breathing
Fatigue
Restlessness
Black, tarry stools
Red spots or patches on the skin
